ORIGINAL BACKYARD: Although having a newer home has many perks, one of the downfalls is having an underdeveloped lot without trees to provide backyard shade. Despite the original concrete patio being large enough to accommodate an outdoor dining set and grill, the blindingly hot summers made it impossible for the homeowners to enjoy outdoor dinners & parties. Adding shade, functionality and unique design elements were the main goals in order to give these homeowners their backyard back.
COVERED VS SCREENED-IN-PORCH: At the beginning of the design phase, the homeowners were faced with the decision to choose between either a covered or screened-in-porch. “With having a large family inclusive of kids and pets, we needed our outdoor space to be unique, open and functional. We knew having an enclosed porch would not work for our family. We ended up choosing an open porch so the kids and dogs can freely move in and out of the house without being trapped by screened-in walls and doors.”
CARPENTRY & ROOFING DETAILS: After the completion of the primary foundation work, a new brushed concrete patio was installed complete with a rounded step for the patio door and a dedicated 3” x 6” area for the grill. Five posts were then installed around the perimeter of the concrete slab to support the new porch roof. Matching shingles and gutters were installed to complete the rough carpentry of the covered porch.
UPGRADED FINISHES: To give the homeowners their requested unique touches, a decorative half wall was added next to the grilling pad and capped with a slab of custom-cut granite. All supporting posts were wrapped using untreated cedar and then painted to match the home’s existing trim color. To complete the final look, white base trim and cedar corbels were added to each supporting post. Additional upgrades were added to the porch including a painted beadboard ceiling and an extended mount ceiling fan.
FINAL RESULT: In the end, great design and excellent craftsmanship came together to give the homeowners the porch of their dreams. In addition to its function and practicality, the covered porch also adds visual interest to the exterior of the home. “The best part of the whole addition is finally having a shaded area that our entire family can enjoy during the warmer months.”
