Converting a Screened Porch into a Four Season Sunroom

This home located in the Copperwood neighborhood on the east side of Carmel, IN, included a 170 sq. ft. screened porch built on a slab foundation. The homeowners wanted to convert the area into a fully heated and cooled four-season sunroom, enabling them four season sunroomto enjoy the space all year long.

Design Phase:  We designed the new porch enclosure to be built over the existing concrete slab foundation. The porch beams and roof structure were sound and required no reworking. While the existing 4 x 4 posts remained in place, the porch screens and trim pieces were removed. The homeowner chose large Anderson gliding windows to maximize the visible glass openings. The existing HVAC system could not handle the additional heating/cooling loads from the new porch, so a PTAC in-wall unit was installed on a new dedicated electrical circuit.

Project Schedule: The design and planning stage lasted three weeks and the lead-time for delivery of the windows was four weeks. The construction of the porch was spread out over a four-week period.

Final Product: The walls were reframed for installation of both the gliding and fixed window units. Custom-sized, fixed, low-e glass windows were installed in the upper gable end. The conversion to a four-season room required the addition of insulation in the new ceiling and walls. The ceiling was finished with 5/8” T1-11 exterior plywood siding. The ridge beam was left exposed and wrapped in rough-sawn cedar. The base moulding, windows and doors were trimmed out in rough sawn cedar as well. The new doors included a fiberglass full-light door with glass transom leading to the outside, and a double French patio door with standard hardware leading into the home. The existing floor slab was covered with new 16” x 16” porcelain tile laid on the diagonal. Finally, all the interior and exterior walls and trim were painted with two coats to match the existing home.
