Project Highlight: Full Basement Remodel with Daylight Windows

Converting unused space in a basement into a multifunctional and family-friendly lower level is a great way to add value and comfort to your home. These Carmel clients wanted to bring not only a media room and wet bar to their downstairs, but also another office/bedroom and bath.

Original Space: This home in the Huntington Chase subdivision on the west side of Carmel was built in the 1990s and included the original unfinished basement of approximately 1200 square feet. As the family’s children grew older, it was important to create a new finished space where the kids could hang out with their friends.

Architectural Design: The project architect created three different preliminary designs to give the owners varying ideas. The final design incorporated the following areas: a 17’x16’media room, a 14’x12’ wet bar, a 17’x21’ billiards area, a 12’x12’office/bedroom, a 5’x8’ bathroom, a 3’x10’stairway, and a 28’x12’ unfinished mechanical/storage room.

Home Theater: We partnered with a specialty audio/visual firm to design and install the components and wiring in the media room, including in-wall and in-ceiling speakers, a ceiling-mounted projector and specialized theater seating. Storage niches were framed in, and stained adjustable shelving was installed, flanking the new flat-screen TV.

Wet Bar Finish: The new wet bar included a cherry cordovan stained cabinet with space for a sink and a microwave. New tan brown granite countertops were installed with a standard beveled edge profile, Kohler sink and Moen faucet. The floor was covered with Alcarra tile in a 12’ x 24’ running bond.

Bathroom Finish: New finishes included a Kohler Cimarron toilet and new 30” vanity in a cherry cordovan stain with an ogee edged cultured marble top. Plumbing fixtures included Moen faucets and a Sterling tub/shower surround made of a tough fiberglass composite material. Finally, new Alcarra 13” floor tile was installed in a straight pattern.

New Daylight Window Wells: The lack of natural light and a leaking window resulted in an upgrade of the existing windows. The first step was to excavate the soil surrounding the existing window wells. We then constructed two new daylight window wells, composed of 6 x 6 treated lumber. Although this was a fairly involved and costly process, the additional natural light added greatly to the atmosphere and usability of the finished space.
