Soon it will be the season for the “who’s who” in the interior design world to forecast the home design trends for 2014. So, we thought it would be fun to see how their predictions for 2013 fared. We design a lot of remodeling projects at CaseIndy, so let’s compare what our customers have decided works for them to the expectations of the design world.
Kitchens: Innovative storage solutions and new technology were to be important in 2013 kitchens. Open-concept was expected to continue as a popular floor plan, with functional flow as the goal. What did we see?
Innovative storage? Yes. Innovations in cabinetry have expanded the options for kitchen storage. It was rare for one of our 2013 kitchen remodels to not have at least a new spice cabinet or hidden trash option. One of our carpenters even created a great way to store the kitchen step stool.
Open floor plan? Yes. Removing peninsulas and installing islands, as well as removing walls to expand the footprint, were both popular features in the kitchens we have remodeled in 2013.
New technology? Yes. Quick-cooking technology could be found in many of our projects, including induction cooktops and GE’s Advantium oven.
Bathrooms: Removing the huge garden tub and replacing it will a large, custom shower was expected to be a growing trend in 2013. Bringing the spa experience home by creating a “shower experience” with multiple shower heads, sound systems and heated floors would be part of the mix. So what did our clients do?
Monster showers? Yes. Not only did we see more large showers being included in remodeled bathrooms, but we also brought in quite a few free-standing tubs.While we cannot show you heated floors, 95% of the bathroom remodels we built had them!
Colors: Even though the Patone color of the year was Emerald, softer hues were expected to dominate home design in 2013. As you can see in the pictures above and below, our clients went with that trend.
Outdoor Living: Bringing the family experience to the outside was expected to be a popular trend in 2013 as well. The goal is to a gathering place that mimics the comfort of the indoors. These projects can include 3 or 4-season additions, screened porches, covered decks or paved seating areas with a fire pit.
Were homeowners looking to entertain outdoors? Yes. The number of outdoor living projects under design here grew quite a bit in 2013. We built beautiful decks, screened and covered porches, and have many more major outdoor renovations yet to come.
Not bad! The experts were spot on with their expectations for home design in 2013.
