Laundry Room Storage Ideas: Cabinets, Drying Racks and More

A laundry room can have plenty of cabinets and still leave you balancing a basket on the floor or spreading damp clothing across the counter. Better organization starts with planning where each task happens, then choosing storage that supports it.

Pull-out drying racks, concealed hampers, basket supports and tall cleaning-tool cabinets each solve a different problem. A laundry room remodel is an opportunity to decide which of those features would make the biggest difference in your home.

Worthington Design & Remodeling’s organized laundry room remodel in Carmel brings several of these ideas together, offering practical inspiration for homeowners planning a similar space.

For homeowners, much of the work that determines how smoothly construction will go happens during this preconstruction period.

Counter space beside the sink and washer creates a place to sort, fold and handle smaller laundry tasks.

Start With the Tasks Your Laundry Room Needs to Handle

Before choosing cabinet doors or finishes, consider what happens between carrying in a basket and putting clean clothing away.

Where do you separate loads? What needs to air-dry? Where do empty baskets wait? Does the room also hold pet supplies, cleaning tools or the coats and bags that come through an adjoining entrance?

Those answers help establish priorities. A household that air-dries clothing regularly may benefit more from a built-in drying rack than another row of shelves. A room that doubles as a mudroom needs storage that keeps arriving coats and shoes from spilling into the laundry workspace.

Make a list of the items you actually store, including their dimensions. Tall bottles, bulky baskets and long cleaning tools need different cabinet interiors.

Give Air-Drying Its Own Place

A pull-out drying rack provides a dedicated surface for garments that need to dry flat or drape over rails. When it is no longer needed, the rack slides back into the cabinetry.

In the Carmel project, the drying rack extends from beneath the countertop. Its folding side sections expand the usable drying area without requiring a freestanding rack to be stored elsewhere.

The important planning detail is clearance. Consider how far the rack projects when open and whether someone can still reach the sink, appliances and doorway. Allow clothing to dry before putting the rack away.

Keep Laundry Contained With a Pull-Out Hamper

A laundry hamper cabinet gives clothing a designated place while keeping the basket behind a cabinet door.

The right arrangement depends on your routine. One hamper may suit a smaller household, while separate compartments can support sorting. Consider how easily the liner or basket can be removed and carried to the washer.

Location matters, too. Positioning the hamper near the work area can reduce the number of times a basket needs to move across the room.

Plan the Washer and Dryer Area Around Loading and Unloading

Front-loading appliances can be raised to reduce how far someone needs to bend. Cabinetry can also incorporate pull-out surfaces that support a basket while clothes move between the machine and the basket.

Worthington’s Carmel project shows how these features can work together: raised appliances above cabinetry, with a pull-out basket support immediately below.

This arrangement needs to be designed around the specific appliances. Support, vibration, ventilation, connections and future service access should be checked against the manufacturer’s installation requirements before cabinetry is built.

Include a Pet Station in the Storage Plan

When the laundry room also serves pets, bowls and supplies deserve space in the plan.

The Carmel cabinetry includes low pull-out drawers fitted with stainless steel bowls. This approach can tuck a feeding station away between uses, but the location should still give the pet enough room to stand comfortably without blocking a busy passage.

Plan food storage separately from detergents and other cleaning products. Consider how bowls will be removed for washing and how the surrounding surfaces will be cleaned. Drinking water should remain accessible whenever your pet needs it.

Use Tall Cabinets for Items That Do Not Fit on Shelves

Brooms, mops and other long tools often end up leaning in a corner because standard shelves do not accommodate them.

A tall cabinet can reserve uninterrupted vertical space for these items. Elsewhere, drawers and shelves can organize smaller supplies without requiring everything to share one large cupboard.

For laundry packets, the American Cleaning Institute recommends keeping them in their original containers, securely stored out of children’s reach and sight. Its laundry packet storage guidance is a useful reference when planning cabinet access and storage.

Let the Mudroom Support the Laundry Room

A combined laundry room and mudroom works best when incoming belongings have their own landing area.

A bench provides somewhere to remove shoes. Hooks accommodate frequently used coats and bags, while closed cabinets handle items that do not need to remain on display. Separating those functions helps preserve the counter space needed for laundry and hides clutter.

In the Carmel project, a wood bench and hooks sit alongside extensive closed storage. The connected cabinetry gives the spaces a coordinated appearance while accommodating different tasks.

Questions to Consider Before Remodeling

Can these cabinet features work in a small laundry room?

Some can, but prioritize the feature that solves your biggest problem. A drying rack or hamper needs room to open, and adding an accessory should not obstruct appliance doors or the walking path. Start with measurements and appliance requirements before selecting cabinet inserts.

Should laundry room cabinets reach the ceiling?

Upper storage can be useful for less frequently used items, but everyday supplies should remain comfortably accessible. The best cabinet height depends on the room, the users and what needs to be stored.

Do you need a sink in a laundry room?

A sink can support hand-washing and cleanup, but it also uses space that could serve as a folding counter or storage. Consider how often you would use it and whether plumbing changes are needed.

Plan a Laundry Room Around Your Household

The most useful laundry room cabinet ideas address the tasks you repeat every week. A drying rack, hamper, basket support or better entry storage should earn its place by making those tasks easier.
