Technological advancements in formulating and manufacturing tile have lead to some exciting home design trends. It’s now even easier for homeowners to move beyond the white ceramic squares of yesteryear. As we saw at the 2012 Homes of Distinction Tour in June, the plethora of options available offer designs full of texture, color and pattern. Here are some highlights:
1) Woodlike tile: Many homeowners love the look of wood floors but worry about the impact of pets and water on their longevity. There are now many styles of tile that give a room the look of wood, while standing up to the wear and tear of a busy household. Manufacturers have begun to perfect mimicking the slight imperfections and texture within natural wood, giving homeowners even more design options.
2) Stonelike tile: One design trend that has come out of Europe over the past few years is tile that has the look of natural stone. Whether you are looking for Onyx, marble, slate or granite, you can have the beauty of stone with the easy maintenance of tile.
3) Shapes & Placement: Over the past few years we have seen movement away from the standard 6” or 12” square tile. Manufacturers have introduced options that are thinner, larger and anything but square. Tile is not necessarily flat either, bringing a whole new texture to a bathroom or kitchen wall. And, with new shapes being introduced, right angles are no longer a given either!
4) Artisanal tile: Along with the growing popularity of these new styles of mass-produced tile, there has been a move toward hand-made, one-of-a-kind tile designs. There are a number of artisans crafting unique pieces that allow homeowners to truly bring a personal touch to their kitchen and bath remodels.
