Bathroom Design Trends: Bring the Spa Home

Imagine yourself relaxing in a deep soaking tub, candles flickering while soft music plays in the back ground. Now imagine that you were having this experience in your own home! The ultimate in luxury does not have to be found in an expensive spa. Here are five ways suggested by the Kitchen and Bath Association to bring the spa experience into your own bathroom:

1) Specialty Showers, Saunas and Soaking Tubs  A signature aspect to creating a relaxing space in your bath is the ultimate shower.  A digital-shower system allows you to program water, sound, light and steam. Another option is to install unique fixtures such as rain shower heads, and custom placed full –body sprays. Showers can be modified to include a steam or sauna function as well.

Deep soaking tubs are a must in a spa-like bathroom. The most recent trend is to install a free-standing tub instead of a garden tub. Including jets or a body-contoured design can increase your enjoyment as well.

2) Mood lighting  Bringing in natural light via skylights or large windows adds to the spa-like feel of a bathroom. Chandeliers, sconces and strip lighting set on dimmers allow for useful work lighting as well as mood lighting for the long soak in the tub.

3) Bring in Color  Color can affect mood, so bring in shades that reflect the atmosphere you are looking to achieve. Soft tones on walls, floors and cabinetry add a luxurious ambiance to a room. Under cabinet lights, as well as lighting options within digital shower systems can also add to your color options.

4) Heated Floors  There is nothing like stepping out of a hot shower or a long soak in the tub onto warm floors. And during our chilly winter months, heated floors can add to the overall comfort of your space. You can also spoil yourself with heated towel racks.

5) Touches That Bring It All Together  Don’t forget the small additions that bring the truly unique feel of a spa to life. Vessel sinks, faucets that begin water flow with the movement of your hand, and even built-in sound systems or LCD screens hidden behind mirrors offer those finishing touches that will make you relax the moment you step into your spa-inspired bathroom.
