Bathroom Addition to 1920s Meridian Kessler Bungalow

The homeowners of this 1920s Meridian Kessler home in Indianapolis needed some extra space for their growing family. They loved their home and their neighborhood, but wanted a small bathroom addition and floor plan reconfiguration to fit the demands of their family.

These clients needed an update to the layout of their upper level. Converting unused attic space would be part of the solution.

The current bathroom placement meant people could look down the hallway at the commode. They dreamed of a small bathroom addition on the upper level and a dedicated bath for the master suite.

Before the Remodel and Bathroom Addition:

You can see in the photo above that this 1920s bungalow home in Meridian Kessler is quaint and compact. The challenge was to make better use of the second floor space to accommodate two bathrooms.

The original second story bathroom was fitted with dated tile and fixtures. It was time for a refresh!

The mosaic tile backsplash and vanity gave part of the bath a more modern appearance, but the overall layout was less than ideal.

After the Meridian Kessler Home Remodel and Bathroom Additions:

The goal for this house was to make the most of the space available.

The second bedroom was the first priority. We removed a small closet to relocate the hallway. A new larger, more functional closet was built using the previous hallway space. We gave the bedroom a complete refresh with new paint, doors, trim, and light fixtures. It now functions beautifully as a cheery nursery.

Bath Addition Required a Bit More Space

While we did extract some additional space by replacing the nursery closet, we still needed a bit more square footage for the bathroom addition. The solution was to expand the existing New Enlarged Dormer.

The dormer expansion provided ample space to add a full bathroom for the hallway and maintain the existing bath as a dedicated master.

The addition of a second full bath adds to the function and value of the home.

The existing bathroom was remodeled and transformed into a true master bath. To save space, we installed a sliding barn door between the bathroom and bedroom.

These clients really wanted to make the most of their space while still keeping with the original style of their 1920s home. That desire influenced our selection of materials. If you look closely you’ll see details such as glass pulls and penny tile which are reminiscent of the earlier era.

A pocket door is another smart design choice for saving space.

The relocation of the hallway gave the upper level a more open and naturally lit layout.

This Meridian Kessler bungalow project turned out beautifully. The small bathroom addition and reconfiguration added to the home’s function and value without detracting from its cottage-like appeal. The remodeled home continues to blend in with its neighbors and the owners can enjoy living in it even more!
